Getting Your Child to Brush

Posted .

If you are lucky, your child can’t wait to brush her teeth. When the time comes, she happily trots off to the bathroom, to spend two wonderful minutes cleaning his or her teeth.  However, if you are like most parents, you probably aren’t that lucky. But take heart, you don’t have to fight the Battle of The Brush every morning and night. There are some things that you can do to get your child interested, if not exactly excited about taking care of their teeth.

For example, you might try getting them involved in their oral health care. It may be as simple as letting them pick out their own toothbrush and toothpaste. Toothbrushes come in a variety of colors and shapes including superheroes and cartoon characters. And toothpaste is available in a number of kid-friendly flavors.

Once you have the toothbrush and toothpaste, it’s time to start brushing!  You might buy another toothbrush so that your child can practice brushing on a favorite stuffed animal. You can also sing special songs when the time comes for them to brush their teeth and a song or music you can play to help them brush their teeth for a full two minutes at a time. Things like stickers and small treats may provide positive reinforcement, as can verbal praise. Of course, one of the best things you can do to help your child become a good brusher is to set a good example. If your child sees you brushing and going to the dentist, and if you brush your teeth along with your child, they will follow your lead.
