Fluoride Fights Cavities

Posted .

Fluoride can greatly benefit your dental health. Fluoride is nature’s cavity fighter, as it helps prevent cavities in patients by strengthening the tooth enamel against acid attacks. It can also reverse early decay. This mineral can be found in many places, including:

Our Office
Dr. Tammeka Nickleberry can apply fluoride when you come in for your routine dental appointment. At a dental office, dental fluoride can be applied as a gel, foam, or varnish. Fluoride treatments at a dental office have a much higher concentration of fluoride than what is found in toothpastes and mouthwashes.

Fluoride Supplement
Fluoride supplements are available by prescription. They come in tablet, drop, and lozenge forms. Dr. Tammeka Nickleberry may recommend fluoride supplements to children who are between six months and sixteen years of age that live in areas without enough fluoride in their drinking water supply.

Use toothpaste that has fluoride to help prevent cavities. Look for a toothpaste with the ADA Seal to be sure that it has fluoride. Brush your teeth at least twice a day.

Fluoride is naturally found in most water sources. Fluoride has been added to public water supplies for the last 70 years to bring the fluoride level up. About 75 percent of the population in the U.S. uses fluoridated water systems.

Many mouthwashes contain fluoride. They make your teeth more resistant to tooth decay. Children should not use fluoride mouthwash until they are about seven unless our dentist recommends it. This is because many young children will swallow the mouthwash.

Who Can Benefit From Dental Fluoride?
Both children and adults can benefit from fluoride. Fluoride intake is the most crucial between 6 months and 16 years old. During these ages, the primary and permanent teeth grow in and fluoride can strengthen the developing teeth. In adults, fluoride is an important aspect of fighting tooth decay.
